Hamstring strains

Hamstring strains/tears/pulls, whatever you may choose to call them, can be one of the most painful, lingering injuries to occur.  And in lieu of the Olympic spirit, one of the most memorable hamstring tears, was of one Derek Redmond.

I cry every time I watch this, now those of you who know me personally, know this is no big feat, to get me to cry, but I'm telling you this one really gets me.

Hamstring tears are extremely painful, and in this video, you certainly can see that even the best athletes in the world are not immune to the ever fearful 'hamstring tear'.

Hamstring strains have the highest rate of recurrence, with many athletes suffering reinjury with a couple weeks following their return to sport.  It is imperative to aggressively rehabilitate the body in order to prevent the possibility of reinjury.  First, you must identify which of the 4 hamstring muscles have been injured; semitendinosus, semimembranosus, and the long and short heads of the bicep femoris.

Semimembranosus (medial hamstring, on the inside of the thigh) is typically strained with activities that stretch the hamstrings through extreme ranges of motion.  For example, sports such as ballet, gymnastics, cheerleading, and yoga can cause this 'overstretching' and a strain can occur.  Runners, and sprinters will tend to injure the lateral hamstring or biceps femoris.  This has to do with the extension of the limb, and the excessive tensile strain present.

Important to note here, hamstring tightness is often cited as a cause of hamstring injures.  HOWEVER, excessive stretching is more likely to cause a hamstring injury than to alleviate one.  So, there is a specific rehabilitation program for the hamstring which includes balance work, gluteal activation and strengthening, as well as core work.

Should you have an acute or chronic hamstring injury, please contact Total Health Solutions in Golden, CO and we will assess the injury and place you on a specific program to strengthen the body and prevent reinjury.
